Tangerine Dream, ce groupe européen nominé sept fois aux Grammy Awards, est un phénomène singulier. En tant que groupe instrumental qui utilise uniquement la dernière technologie haut de gamme tout en s’environnant d’une forte identité Rock & Roll, il est difficile de les placer dans un genre musical donné. Nombreux sont ceux qui ont tenté de copier ce qui est aujourd’hui connu comme le « Son de Tangerine Dream » – jusqu’ici sans le moindre succès.
Ils ont toujours eu leurs petits secrets ; comment les strates ont été structurées puis finalement réunies pour former une expérience musicale indescriptible, ou comment ils ont réussi à toujours devancer les mouvements de mode. Tangerine Dream n’a jamais rien produit dans le but de faire sauter les masses de leurs chaises en hurlant aux Hit Parades. Néanmoins, beaucoup des 107 (et ce n’est pas fini !) albums studio, live, et soundtracks sortis par le groupe ont leurs propres fils conducteurs et morceaux hypnotiques, et il est quasiment impossible d’échapper à la course des notes rapides et meneuses de basse.
Tangerine Dream s’est continuellement efforcé d’entrelacer la musique et l’émotion au niveau personnel, en opposition à avoir un public de simples observateurs, qui regardent et qui écoutent.
Reconnaissant l’adage « présent aujourd’hui, oublié demain » qui caractérise l’industrie du spectacle, TD a survécu aux orages et temps sombres du ShowBiz international. Cela vient peut-être de leur goût pour l’inexplicable et l’inattendu dans la musique, du voyage aventureux dans lequel ils se sont embarqués en entrainant leur public.
Tout le monde n’accrocherait pas automatiquement à la musique de TD, mais quand on les connaît, on les aime. Quand Edgar Froese a fondé Tangerine Dream en automne 1967 – une période marquée par le réveil en fanfare du monde de la musique en différents points du globe – il avait déjà acquit une vision qui lui a permit de découvrir de nouveaux sons et techniques musicales. Plus de 40 ans après, et après que des douzaines de personnes aient rejoint et quitté le groupe, Edgar est toujours provocateur et passionnant dans sa philosophie musicale unique.
Homme de peu de mots mais au sens de l’humour narquois, il a montré que la musique peut souvent atteindre des lieux bien plus lointains que ceux que l’on trouve par la description des mots.
Pendant des années, Tangerine Dream a composé beaucoup de bandes originales pour des productions hollywoodiennes, une seconde carrière très lucrative dans le remarquable journal de bord musical de TD. A une époque où les instruments électroniques étaient largement incompris et l’industrie de la musique indépendante pratiquement inexistante, Tangerine Dream s’est fait reconnaître comme pionnier d’une nouvelle musique instrumentale en présentant des nouveaux sons, effets, et productions techniques.
De grands peintres, photographes, acteurs, architectes, auteurs et danseurs ont remercié TD pour l’inspiration que leur apportait leur musique dans leurs propres travaux. La réputation de Tangerine Dream dans le monde de la musique, leur grande expérience et leur professionnalisme, leurs performances live inoubliables aussi bien que leurs ventes d’albums leur donne la liberté de travailler de façon indépendante. Au moins, c’est la meilleure façon de garder et de développer la marque de fabrique de Tangerine Dream : une originalité qui ne peut être ni copiée, ni violée.
Tangerine Dream, this seven time Grammy nominated European band, is a singular phenomenon. As an instrumental band using just high-end modern technology, simultaneously surrounded by a strong Rock & Roll identity, they will hardly fit into any given musical pigeonhole. Many have tried to copy what‘s became known after years as “The Tangerine Dream Sound” – so far absolutely unsuccessfully.
They always had their little secrets; how all the musical layers were structured and finally glued together to an undescribable musical experience and how they‘ve managed to always be ahead of any fashionable movement.
Tangerine Dream has never produced anything calculated to make the masses jump off their chairs and start screaming Top 40 tunes. Nevertheless, many of the 107 (and counting!) CD Studio, Live and Soundtrack releases by the band, have their own driving hypnotic pieces and it is nearly impossible to escape from the race of fast driving bass notes.
Tangerine Dream has continually striven to intertwine music into feeling on a personal level as opposed to having an audience of mere observers, watching and listening.
Recognizing the here today, gone tomorrow adage of the entertainment industry, TD has survived all the stormy and cloudy days within the international showbiz. It is maybe their great hunger for the unexplainable and unexpected in music, the adventurous journey upon which they‘ve taken themselves and their audiences.
TD music is something not everybody will jump on immediately – but chances are, if you really know them, you love them. When Edgar Froese founded Tangerine Dream back in autumn 1967 – a period when most of the musical world had just gotten its big wake up call from various places around the globe – he already had had visions to discover new sounds and musical techniques.
Over 40 years later, and despite dozens of people joining and leaving the band, Edgar is still provocative and challenging in his uniquely philosophical musical universe. As a man of few words but a wry sense of humor, he has shown that music often can reach places far beyond those found by the descriptions of words.
For many years TD did lots of hunting scores for Hollywood movie productions, a very lucrative second career within the remarkable TD artistic diary. At a time when electronic instruments were widely misunderstood and an independent music industry was virtually non-existent, Tangerine Dream became recognized as the pioneers of a new instrumental music and introduced new sounds, sound effects and production techniques.
Great painters, photographers, actors, architects, writers and dancers have honored Tangerine Dream for the inspiration for their own work they‘ve drawn from listening to the music of TD. Tangerine Dream‘s reputation in the world of music, their vast experience and professionalism, their unforgettable live performances as well as their record sales give them the freedom to work independently. At the very least it is the best way to keep and develop TD‘s all time trademark: Originality which can’t be copied or raped.
